Welcome to Saint Teresa's History curriculum page.
INTENT: At St. Teresa’s, we aim to engage, support and challenge our pupils to exhibit and maintain strong historical knowledge of Britain’s past and the past of the wider world. By exploring this knowledge through history’s different conceptual lenses; we can prepare our young historians with an informed historical perspective of the world around them. We aim to deliver a history curriculum that is accessible to all; one that will maximise the outcomes for every child so that they know more, remember more and understand more.
Our history curriculum makes full use of resources within the immediate and wider local area, enabling children to develop a deep understanding of the history of their locality. As historians, our pupils will investigate the past through a range of sources and build upon their substantive and disciplinary knowledge within and across units. We want children to be curious about the past and conduct historical investigations on chronology, sources of evidence, historical interpretations and knowledge and understanding of significant people and events of the past.
We aim to enable children to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, sift arguments, and develop perspective and judgement. It is important for children to develop a sense of identity through learning about the past and we want them to know how history has shaped their own lives.
HISTORY OVERVIEW: We follow a 2 year cycle plan and our curriculum is linked to Building the Kingdom. Based upon the principles of Catholic Social Teaching; pupils learn about the history of the planet that God has provided for us. We are currently in 'Cycle B' for the academic year 2024 - 2025.
SUBSTANTIVE CONCEPTS: We have mapped out key historical concepts that the children will revisit again and again, providing a progression of understanding against each concept. This will help to develop the children’s understanding of the bigger picture of the world and the way they can be a part of its future. The substantive concepts we will cover are: - Agriculture, Empire, Invasion, Kingdom, Monarchy, Religion, Settlement and Trade. Year 5 and 6 will additionally cover Social Justice.
AS HISTORIANS... the children will investigate the past through the teaching of the following skills and key concepts:
- Chronological understanding
- Historical investigations using a range of sources
- Historical interpretations
- Knowledge of people and events
- Continuity and change
- Cause and consequence
- Similarity and difference
- Historical Significance
