At St. Teresa’s Catholic Primary School, we recognise that Mathematics is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering, and necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment. Our intent is to provide the children of our school with a high quality mathematics curriculum that is both challenging and enjoyable, that will help children master mathematical content and enable them to have skills that will help them in their everyday life, and in the future.
We aim to provide a high quality mathematics education so that all children:
- become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics
- reason mathematically
- can solve problems by applying their mathematics. (National Curriculum 2014)
We intend on delivering a curriculum which:
- allows children to be part of engaging lessons that will give them a range of opportunities to explore mathematics following the White Rose Hub approach.
- gives each child a chance to believe in themselves as mathematicians and develop the power of resilience and perseverance when faced with mathematical challenges.
- recognises that mathematics underpins much of our daily lives and therefore is of paramount importance in order that children aspire and become successful in the next stages of their learning.
- engages all children and entitles them to the same quality of teaching and learning opportunities, striving to achieve their potential.
- makes rich connections across mathematical ideas to develop fluency, reasoning and competence in solving increasingly sophisticated problems.
- provides equal opportunities for children to apply their mathematical knowledge to other subjects (cross-curricular links).
Teaching and learning, content and sequence planning follows the White Rose schemes of work, aligned to the National Curriculum. We also use the National Centre for Excellence in the teaching of Mathematics (NCETM) resources. We adapt and enhance the White Rose scheme for the needs of our pupils. By using a variety of planning resources we believe that we provide a bespoke teaching and learning experience that is designed to interest, inform and inspire our children.

To develop fact fluency, all children have access to Numbots and Times Tables Rockstars. The expectation is that children will play these fun games as part of their homework.
During Celebration Assemblies, a child from each class receives a certificate for being 'Robot' or 'Rockstar' of the Week.

Year 6 enjoy practising their calculation skills through a range of fun games involving dice and playing cards. They get very competitive as you can see below!
Year 4 looked amazing dressed as rockstars for Times Tables Rockstars Day but they couldn't beat the teachers for effort.
